We are KICKING IT for "Super David"...please read his mom's story below...
I thought we were just going in for a normal 4 year well check, until the pediatrician felt a mass in David's abdomen and sent us to the hospital for an ultrasound the next day. Instead of celebrating his 4th birthday, David was diagnosed with bilateral Wilm's tumor, had a port placed, and was starting chemo. I will never forget when the pediatrician uttered the words cancer in conjunction with our son. It was unfathomable. Throughout his 6 months of treatment, David underwent countless blood draws, 27 weeks of chemo, 6 days of radiation, a major surgery to remove a kidney and a half, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, fatigue, hair loss, isolation, and fear.
Speaking of nausea, check out these horrible statistics about childhood cancer: 1 in 285 children will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 20; 43 children are diagnosed with cancer a day; cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among children, killing more children than all other diseases combined; 98% of childhood cancer survivors suffer from a chronic health condition by the age of 45.
Despite these nauseating statistics, childhood cancer is considered a rare disease and is grossly under-funded. While 96% of Federal funding for research is for adult cancers, only 4% of funds go towards childhood cancer research. Less than 1% of funding from donations to the American Cancer Society is directed towards childhood cancer research. About 900 adult cancer drugs are in the drug development stage and almost none are being developed for childhood cancer. In the past 20 years, only two new drugs have been developed for childhood cancer, leaving some chemo treatments for children as old as 25 years.
Childhood cancer is in no way rare and is definitely not fair. Not only does it rock the child's world, but it turns the world upside down for the entire family. We need your help in raising funds for research as well as bringing awareness to this disease and the need for more attention and funding!
